When Did Blackpink Debut?
Because of the popularity of K-pop, online users are interested in the history of venerable K-pop acts like BLACKPINK. Despite the fact that BLACKPINK debuted on August 8, 2016, the plot actually began in the early 2000s.
This popular girl group was created by YG Entertainment in 2010. Each member submitted an application to the YG label this year to be a trainee. Before making their debut, K-pop singers in South Korea undergo years of training. All four members joined the band as trainees and went through close to four or five years of training.
Why Are They Called Blackpink?
The name of the organization was intended to be in opposition to the idea of femininity that is sometimes connected with the color pink. Blackpink’s record company, YG Entertainment, explained that the name of the group is meant to suggest that it represents more than just beauty. In the first lines of “Ddu-Ddu Ddu-Du,” Jennie sings, “I may appear sweet, but I don’t act like it.”
What Makes Blackpink Different From Other Groups?
Blackpink has only released a small number of tracks since its debut in 2016, including the Japanese translations of its Korean songs. Before “Kill This Love,” the group had done so. However, a few of their tunes have not only reached the Billboard charts but have gone popular online, with their distinctive dancing moves frequently being imitated by other K-pop stars and fans around the world in dance covers.
The group’s aggressiveness, which is a result of a combination of brash rapping, forceful singing, and stylish dressing, is a big part of what makes them so appealing. Blackpink emphasizes dark and edgy themes through the images in their music videos, such as the bejeweled tank in “Ddu-Ddu Ddu-Du,” even if these ideas are not original in K-pop girl groups.
How Did the Popularity of Blackpink Grow?
In 2016, Blackpink made its official debut with the release of the single album Square One, which featured the songs “Whistle” and “Boombayah.” Blackpink was the first girl group to emerge from YG Entertainment, the major label that is home to powerhouse groups like BIGBANG and 2NE1, in seven years. Therefore, the debut was eagerly anticipated in the K-pop world. The trio became the first musical artists, at the time, to reach No. 1 on the Billboard World Digital Songs list with “Boombayah,” and their success persisted with other releases the following year.
When Blackpink joined Interscope Records and Universal Music Group last October, the possibility of a larger worldwide impact became clear. The label and YG Entertainment collaborated with the intention of marketing the group abroad. Soon after, Blackpink performed on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Good Morning America to make their American television debut.
How Did Blackpink Get So Many Followers on Social Media?
Blackpink has increased in popularity on social media with each new album release. In addition to having the most Instagram followers among K-pop female idols, Blackpink also has the most followers among K-pop groups, with 16.4 million as of April 2019. The teaser images of each member giving menacing faces while sporting new hair colors earned over two million likes on the official account before the release of “Kill This Love.” As Blackpink announces new plans to infiltrate the territories of worldwide admirers, the catchphrase from the group’s first song, “Boombayah,” “Blackpink in your area,” is constantly trending on Twitter.
