On February 6th, 2009, the film Coraline was released. Coraline is an animated dark fantasy adventure based on Neil Gaiman’s children’s novella of the same name. It follows the young protagonist, who has recently relocated to a new block of apartments and is becoming more ignored by her loving but work-obsessed parents. Thanks to a doll that curiously resembles her, she discovers a portal to a livelier parallel realm named Other World one night. However, life isn’t always better on the other side of the mirror, and Coraline quickly learns the steep price of staying in this new fantasy realm. Soon, the formerly lonely girl becomes the only chance for her parents and countless other children’s souls, but will she be able to stop the mysterious Beldam?
Harry Selick, the creative animator behind A Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach, helmed the 2009 film. Gaiman ran into Selick as he was wrapping up the novella. He urged the filmmaker to produce an animated movie as a fan of his past work, albeit the final picture would incorporate numerous new plot components to attain its 100-minute duration. Coraline, like Selick’s other works, is a stop-motion animation that required a staff of nearly 450 people to complete. Coraline’s art design sets it apart from Selick’s earlier animated films. The filmmaker enlisted the help of Japanese painter Tadahiro Uesugi to create the film’s style, and he ended up spending a year on the project.
He devised colour palette shifts that distinguished the subdued actual world from the brighter Other World. When it was first released, this modern fairy tale wowed both parents and children, and it went on to become the third most popular stop-motion animated picture of all time.
