The Madden High School offensive lineman earned a football scholarship to Oregon. At Oregon, he defeated the one-mile world record holder, John Landy, in a 40-yard dash, but never played football due to a knee injury.

Norm Van Brocklin taught him soccer while watching movies. He was an assistant and head coach at Allan Hancock College in 1962 when he was just 24 years old.

In 1964, he became an assistant defensive coach at San Diego State University. Super Bowl champion NFL linebackers coach, he was only 31 when he took the job.

After John Rauch left for the Buffalo Bills, 32-year-old John Madden became the youngest head coach in the league.
